Coverday Friday! (6) x3

Behind a Million and One Pages

Welcome one and all to another Coverday Friday! This is a very late Coverday Friday (11:16pm) so grab a coffee and let's go. This week's Cover is by none other than homegrown Aussie, Garth Nix, and you get lucky tonight because this is a series Coverday Friday!

Why Hello There:

I originally got this as a present from my best friend. I saw the covers she had on her self of this book as well as the cover in QBD, but never saw this one. I actually prefer this one to the others when I look at it, because there's more going on in this cover than just the plain black background with the symbol in the middle. The cover just oozes cool-ness, especially when it's in your hands. The unique thing about this cover is that the symbol is pushed out when you touch it (you know what I mean, it's like when the cover is normal but then the symbol is bigger than the cover so it's bumpy like)

At the Other End:

Who will guard the living when the dead arise? Sabriel is sent as a child across the Wall to the safety of a school in Ancelstierre. Away from magic; away from the Dead. After receiving a cryptic message from her father, 18-year-old Sabriel leaves her ordinary school and returns across the Wall into the Old Kingdom. Fraught with peril and deadly trickery, her journey takes her to a world filled with parasitical spirits, Mordicants, and Shadow Hands -- for her father is none other than The Abhorson. His task is to lay the disturbed dead back to rest. This obliges him -- and now Sabriel, who has taken on her father's title and duties -- to slip over the border into the icy river of Death, sometimes battling the evil forces that lurk there, waiting for an opportunity to escape into the realm of the living. Desperate to find her father, and grimly determined to help save the Old Kingdom from destruction by the horrible forces of the evil undead, Sabriel endures almost impossible challenges whilst discovering her own supernatural abilities -- and her destiny.

Why Hello There:
Ok, I must admit that I'm getting this book for Christmas from my sister as well as the one below. I cannot wait! I ordered these off Fishpond because no where else had these last two in the series and I've been looking for a while. So I ordered these and my sister is giving them to me for christmas, but I cheated and told her that I need to make sure the cover is the right one (because there were so many). *Sigh*, it's even more gorgeous in person! Oh and yes, it was the right cover. With this cover, there is no unique thing about it like the other two covers, yet the colour and picture of this one is my favourite, so it is unique in that perspective.

At the Other End:

In the Old Kingdom, while the Abhorsen Sabriel is off fighting the undead, who are waking in worryingly ever-increasing numbers, Lirael is alone in the glacial mountain kingdom of the Clayr dreaming of when she will receive the gift of "the sight"--which all true daughters of Clayr possess. She fills the long wait with years of self-taught charter magic and investigations into what lies in the depths of the Clayr library--a truly vast and ancient place.
In Ancelstierre, Prince Sameth, son of Sabriel and designated Abhorsen-in-waiting, is battling with his own inner demons. His own familiarity with charter magic is limited and it even sometimes scares him. This weight of expectation is crystallised when he is attacked by an evil necromancer intent on killing him. Sameth barely escapes with his life.
In these times of increased undead activity, Sabriel suspects a greater force at work. Sameth must return to the Old Kingdom and learn fast to help counter this enormous threat while Lirael too must play her part. She is a girl with an important destiny and is sent out towards the area of darkness and mystery that holds the key to what has been happening.

Why Hello There:

This is part 2 of the christmas present I explained before from my sister. I literally cannot wait for them to be on my bookshelf next to Sabriel! (yes I has to say that I'm excited for them again). As well as Lirael, I had to check the cover of this one beforehand as well (of course). Should I say how much I love this cover? The unique thing in this cover was that there was all the symbols (from the series) imprinted on the front cover of this one, so when you move the cover around at a different angle you can see them all.

At the Other End:

Orannis the Destroyer has been freed
And only Lirael, newly come into her inheritance as the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, has any chance of stopping it. She and her companions -- Sam, the Disreputable Dog, and Mogget -- have to take that chance. If Orannis's unspeakable powers are unleashed, it will mean the end of all Life. With the help of her companions and a vision from the Clayr to guide her, Lirael must search in both Life and Death for some means to defeat the Destroyer -- before it is too late. . . .

The Consideration Game:

Although I have Sabriel and have had it for a while, I haven't read it yet, because I wanted to read the other two in the series straight after it. So after christmas this is one of my priority reads! cannot wait to read this series, it's been recommended to me for a while now, and I also have read an excerpt (coerced into it by my best friend) and it's left me hanging for more!

So... What do YOU THINK of the covers? Would YOU READ this series?
