At the Other End:

Theo woke severely injured, covered in blood, and missing ten years of her life. Just to complicate matters further, Theo was born under a prophecy; one that has rabid followers with three different interpretations, all of whom are willing to sacrifice her in order to fulfill it.

Not knowing if she can trust the stranger she’s betrothed to, the warrior visiting her dreams, or even her own mother, Theo tries to piece together her past only to find that her present is far more dangerous. It’s the power of her own blood that scares her most of all. This is a responsibility Theo never wanted, and a destiny she cannot deny, “All because of a prophecy she was trying not to believe in, but kept fulfilling.”

What Inspired Spirit Binder: Opening Scenes

I have a habit as a writer of creating stories based off of scenes or ideas that get stuck in my head. Usually I am baking, or listening to music, or walking home from doing errands, and an idea just slides into my mind.

I then see the idea as a series of actions … what happens, to whom, and when, and where, and why?

I often know nothing of the story or even the character. All I have to go on is the idea of the scene. Something happens, and then, when I sit down to write that something, a story unfolds. This usually ends up being a moment in time, separated from the possible story it could become, but brimming with possibilities.

Spirit Binder opens with such a scene, and I wrote it pretty much as outlined above. It got edited and tweaked, of course, in the multiple drafts that I wrote afterwards. But the idea of a woman, severely injured, covered in blood, and missing ten years of her life, was compelling. It dragged me further into the story. Who is this woman? What was she doing the moment before she lost her memories? What will she do to get them back? What if it’s not all good? What if there is something nefarious going on? What would that be? Etc.

Later, I would make choices about the specific world, such as character names, magic, and relationships to Theo. Then I would choose a setting, time period, and outline the structure of the plot based on the theme, but it was the opening scene that started everything for me.

At first I thought this was a single novel, an encapsulated idea, such as my first book, After The Virus. But, now I know it’s an entire world for me explore and share. I’ve written two books (Time Walker will be released in the fall of 2012) and two more treatments based on a single idea that slipped into my mind while I was baking some cookies.

Hopefully, that provides a little insight when reading Spirit Binder.

Thanks Gina, for the opportunity to guest post!
