Guest Post: Jade Kennedy of Silver Threads

At the Other End:

'Silver Threads' is the first collection of poetry by Jade Kennedy, one of the most recent literary talents to emerge from the city of Hull. Like the 'white wild flower sprung up between the cracks' of her opening poem, Jade's poetic voice has its roots in urban reality, its attention fixed at the sky, and a considerable elegance of its own.

The poems are filled to the brim with rich, descriptive images to savour, illuminated by moonlight and a scattering of stars - and a sincere respect for our literary heritage, with subtle nods to Robert Frost and Virginia Woolf along the way. Put simply, this is a collection that deserves a place in your life and on your Kindle; download it now to see why.

Shhh....... Don't Tell:

Well lucky you... here's one of the poems from Silver Threads just for you all :)

The Crows

I had a dream last night
that I stood in a field of pure white wheat
and it swayed and bowed to the will of the wind.
The sky grew angry and started to cry.
The wheat wilted and rotted away.
Underneath the wheat
crows had been hiding
and now hundreds of them
spread their wings and took to the sky,
turning day to night.

The stars came out
and yawned and stretched.
They saw me standing, watching
and one by one started to sing.
In the middle of the field
a tree began to play music,
like a music box without the ballerina.
The tree started flowering the whitest of roses,
and the petals fell in time with the tune.
Each petal had a message
written in black ink;
"Vous et nul autre"

Poetry and Me

I have always loved writing, ever since I can remember I have loved pens, pencils and paper. I had pretty notebooks by the dozen but for many years they were kept in pristine condition. Some I classed as ‘far too pretty to write in’ others were filled with random thoughts. It was difficult knowing that all I wanted to do was write but not what I wanted to write. I tried to write stories, year after year, but they were cold and lifeless, my characters wooden and one dimensional. Even if I eventually thought of a story that flowed slightly better than my other attempts, I just ‘ran out of steam.’

I first thought about writing poetry in my late teens, but simply as a way to release anger and as a vent for depression. These poems were dark and personal, had no imagery or flow but were just as I said, an outlet. I finally came into my own with poetry in 2009, I finally felt like I had found my niche.

I wrote like a demon that year and filled notebooks, one after the other with poetry, thoughts and poetic fragments that came into my mind that would later become more poetry. I write about what I love and what inspires me, I lot of poetry that I come across is about the everyday, ‘The Walk in the Park’ or ‘The Conversation I had the Other Day.’ I prefer to write about life and love, magic and nature! I have often said that if I had to teach someone my style of writing I would say ‘take what inspires you and tell me what is tastes of? What does it sound like? What would be the aroma of sunlight if it had one?’ I love mixing up all the senses in my writing. A lot of my poetry involves dreams, madness, all different parts of love and relationships. Life is varied and amazing and I think poetry should be about the essence of life, distilled into a few sentences, I don’t know if anyone else would agree with me or not! Lol

I had ’Silver Threads’ (my first collection) of poetry published this year by Valley Press, a small publishing house in the north of England. It has been amazing to see something that I created in print and I have had nothing but lovely comments and positive feedback from the people who have read it. Some people simply say that they don’t like poetry or ‘don’t get it’ and I can understand this! But I have a small hope that maybe some of my poetry might change their minds and they will realise that not all poetry is the same.

Thank you Gina for the opportunities for the guest blog J

Review: Survival by A.M. Hargrove

Survival (The Guardians of Vesturon, #1)At the Other End:
"Maybe I was caught between the two worlds. I was having serious trouble distinguishing fantasy from reality."

While on a backpacking trip in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, nineteen-year-old Maddie Pearce finds her world has been thrown into a vortex and is madly spinning toward the impossible. Abducted by a mad psychopath, Maddie narrowly escapes with her life. But that is only the beginning. Her mysterious rescuer introduces her to a world that Maddie has difficulty accepting as reality. Will this strikingly gorgeous stranger be the key to her future or will she return to her mundane world, scarred from her experience? Follow Maddie as she is forced to make difficult decisions that carry her to mysterious places only to find that perhaps it was all for nothing.

First Impressions Last:

A fast-paced story lvoe story that makes our hearts pound and leaves us with the questions on forbidden love. Part paranormal/sci-fi/romance/thriller, this book suits all.

Behind the 299 Pages:

First of all, I love how the book is broken up into 4 'mini' books. Bringing with it a change in perspective, as well as with every few chapters the change in P.O.V. We have a set of characters for each 'book' that it can change P.O.V to, it does include setting changes as well.

While we are in the protagonist, Maddie's point of view, we get left with her either speaking formally as the Guardians do, or in her usual American slang. It's weird to switch formalities so many times. it is random as well, sometimes she feels as if she needs to speak formally, whereas others it seems like she lets go the control out of her tone and language that she can actually be herself and not ahve to speak as mature as she is, especially without her parents we see her desire to prove she is mature. However, it is her actions that defines her as this, not so much as by the formality in her tone. (Yes, there is some, but her use of American slang does not diminish this.)

Another thing I love about this book is how, even though we mainly see and know more than Maddie, we expect everything that happens as well as come to more understanding when she finds out, as we are given more information about certain topics in the book when she finds out about it. Although not much of a big fan of the unexpected seeing as we know most things that happen, but I love the way that we are hanging onto the information we already know and try to guess for it to strike Maddie's life. This also includes the meaning and story behind the occurrence.

When we are in the brothers' perspective, we see that Maddie starts to get annoying with everything that she does to try and help. It brings light to the story as well as the added laugh, and is there as a bit of fluff (if you get what I mean), yet the fluff is not particularly noticable, we would miss this bit of it were taken out. This brings a new side to Maddie's character that we start to discover along with the brothers.

We feel sorry for Rayne and Maddie and their complicated relationship. Awww, forbidden love! it will never cease to exist (well, it does make for a good story). Sometimes, however, we feel that everyone in the book only cares about looks and calling each other "hot" and "drop dead gorgeous", which does annoy me because to me they are terms that don't express or convey any actual feelings and emotions like for in the context it was brought into.

Like I previously explained, the book is majorly predictable (although this is without being shown/told the information/situation). Yet it still doesn't quite annoy us as much as many others do because there are other elements brought into the scene that still make it interesting to read and push through.

At the end of the book, a lot of questions are still left unanswered, making us anxious to read the second novel. The cliffhanger at the end makes me suspect that book 2, could lead onto 'mini' book 5?

What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Shhh....... Don't Tell:

Exclusive excerpt from Chapter 1 of Viper's Creed. WARNING, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.

“This is called 'step training,' it's to gain balance and confidence,” her mother said knowledgeably. “This is an
old, old technique. It's also the way your assassin friend trained.”

Her assassin friend.

The reminder of Crash was unexpected, and Sora bit her lip, quickly turning away from her mother. Well, he
hadn't truly been a friend, but definitely someone who had changed her life. The mention of Crash left her flustered and tense, not a welcomed feeling, though she didn't mention it. He had left a year ago, traveling away with their mutual companion, Burn. An entire year... but she still thought of them every day. Every. Single. Damned. Day.

“Now you do it,” her mother said, ignoring Sora's reaction, or perhaps oblivious to it.

Sora turned back, forcefully shaking the memories away. She clenched her teeth. She certainly wasn't going
to give up if her mother could do something like that, and if this is what Crash can do, then I'm going to do it too!
She and the assassin had started off on pretty bad terms—he had kidnapped her from an arranged wedding,
killing her supposed father, and had whisked her away into the night—but things had changed. They had grown close, somehow. “Close” seemed almost too much. Perhaps familiar? Was there another word for it? Crash was not the kind of man who inspired warmth, and yet... she missed him strangely, in rare moments of the day, when she was knee deep in housework or out riding through the forest. She yearned to see him again, though she wasn't sure why. A cloud would shift overhead or a crow fly through the trees, and she would turn to look, imagining it was him.

Or Burn, she reminded herself. I miss Burn too.

Here I am!

Hello lovely peoples :D

I have some exciting news to share, I have found myself!
OK well I knew that this was going to happen but I just wasn't sure when it was going to happen.

NOW IT HAS (haha obviously)

I've just found myself, as a guest blogger/author that is, on my local library's Youth Blog!

I am featured on a post with Narellan and Camden Library's hidden treasures. To most of you here that regularly follow the blog you've almost certainly heard of the novels mentioned. We bibliophiles (yes I confess, don't try to deny it... stop shaking your head) found our love for these books from the help of Goodreads and other bloggers whilst searching the Internet.

So, this post has (hopefully) shed some light on those little wonders that we all here are so familiar with. Hoping to get these brilliant novels out in my local area as well as spread Australia (you all have no idea how far behind we are. In the recent months we have only just gotten Anna Dressed In Blood. I can tell your reaction to this, my response: I KNOW RIGHT!)

Come check out my feature, A Library's Hidden Treasures on Y-Link now!

BLOG TOUR! Out of the Dark by Quinn Loftis

Out Of The Dark (The Grey Wolves, #4)
At the Other End:
Darkness has descended on the Transylvanian Alps.
Four packs of the powerful Grey wolves – in a rare show of cooperation – had joined together here in an effort to help their pack members find true mates. Then they were betrayed by one of their own – an Alpha hell-bent on becoming the most powerful of the Canis lupis. And though the wolf's assassination attempt on the currently-reigning Romanian Alpha failed, his plans to get Decebel, the Romanian Beta, out of the picture were coming together even as his treachery was discovered. The wolf fled, leaving destruction, death, and a missing mate behind him.

Unbeknownst to the other packs, the wolf has employed a witch to finish the deadly job and help him gain another tool to increase his power. A curse of devastating proportions will cripple Decebel in a way that may dissolve his fragile bond with Jennifer. Meanwhile, injured and alone, Jen has been fighting for her life. She had come to terms with her fate, accepting that she would not share a life with Decebel, until help came in the most unexpected form...

Vasile will have to use all his resources – including Sally, the new gypsy healer of the Romanian pack – to discover a way in which to destroy the witch, lift the curse from Decebel and reunite him with the one woman who makes him whole, and solve a mystery that's been surrounding the Romanian pack for 300 years.

Shhh....... Don't Tell:

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT from Chapter 5 of book #4 of the Grey Wolves series, Out Of The Dark.
Decebel watched from across the semi-circle. The easy way in which Fane and his mate interacted, the obvious love and affection they shared... I had that, he thought.
How could I forget having that? Did she tease me? Did I look at her in adoration as Fane does at Jacque?
Decebel's mind wandered. He puzzled through the idea that if he did indeed have a mate, he'd more than just forgotten her—her face, the color of her eyes or hair. He hadn't just forgotten the feel of her skin or the feel of her body against his. He had forgotten all that they had shared. He felt a sharp pain rip through his chest. Did I hold her? Kiss her? He closed his eyes, squeezing them tight, trying so hard to find something, anything that would confirm that she did exist. Jen, his mate. But nothing, there was nothing.
He growled as he felt his wolf stir. His wolf knew something he didn't. Maybe his wolf remembered her – or maybe he just remembered having her and now knew there was something lost. He looked across at Fane and made eye contact, a silent request to talk later. Fane nodded, his lips tightened in something that looked like sadness.

When a mysterious foreign exchange student from Romania moves in across the street, Jacque and her two best friends, Sally and Jen, don't realize the last two weeks of their summer was going to get a lot more interesting. From the moment Jacque sets eyes on Fane she feels an instant connection, a pull like a moth to a flame. Little does she know that the flame she is drawn to is actually a Canis lupis, werewolf, and she just happens to be his mate; the other half of his soul. The problem is Fane is not the only wolf in Coldspring, Texas. Just as Fane and Jacque are getting to know each other, another wolf steps out to try and claim Jacque as his mate. Fane will now have to fight for the right to complete the mating bond, something that is his right by birth but is being denied him by a crazed Alpha. Will the love Fane has for Jacque be enough to give him the strength to defeat his enemy, will Jacque accept that she is Fane's mate and complete the bond between them?

With the challenge complete and the corrupt Alpha of Coldspring defeated Fane is now free to complete the mate bond with Jacque and perform the Blood Rites. Although the challenge is done, the affects are far reaching. Once it is known that Vasile, one of the strongest Alphas in the world is in America, specifically Coldspring, TX, there is one Alpha who cannot over look the significance of this. An Alpha who happens to share Jacque's DNA, but is this the one she needs to fear?

With her mom driving and her two best friends, Jen and Sally in tow, Jacque sets off for her happily ever after. She will soon realize a plan has been put in motion that will change her course and possibly tear her from Fane's grasp forever. It will take a wolf pack, her mother's love, her two best friend's unrelenting determination, her own will to survive and the undying love of her mate to bring her home. The question remains, if she fights, if she endures, who will she be, what will be left once she is back in her mates arms.

At the Other End:Jennifer Adams, best friend to Jacque Pierce and Sally Morgan, spicy, out spoken, a little crazy and human...or so she thought. Jen has just found out that human DNA is not the only thing that resides in her veins, she happens to share that little pesky werewolf gene, although it isn't more than just a drop. Now that she and her friends are living in Romania with Fane's pack, she is also oh so conveniently stuck with the object of her affection, the fur ball Decebel.

Drawn to each other by something they don't understand Jen finds herself frustrated by the lack of mating signs between her and said fur ball. Not only is she dealing with that not so un-frustrating problem, she now has been informed that because of that little drop of werewolf blood in her she is now required to attended a multi-pack gathering for un-mated wolves. This type of gathering hasn't taken place in over a century but with a shortage of females among the werewolf population the males are getting worried they won't ever find their true mates.

Meanwhile Decebel struggles with the emotions he is feeling towards Jen. He tries to keep his distance but there is just something about the mouthy blonde that keeps him coming back for more of her verbal abuse that he just can't seem to get enough of...go figure.

Beyond the Veil (Grey Wolves Series #5)
At the Other End:
Though the Serbian pack has been brought to heel thanks to the downfall of their Alpha, the war is far from over.
Desdemona, a witch of unfathomable power, has escaped the wolves’ wrath, but she will not go quietly into the night. She takes refuge in a place where even the smallest sliver of light does not dare to enter. Though she had to flee, she has not given up on the treasure she wishes to acquire. Her depravity knows no bounds; she's even willing to search for the one who can assist her in opening a Veil that has not been opened in millennia – with good reason: the danger is incalculable.

Meanwhile, there are major changes rippling through the Romanian Grey wolves. Decebel has become Alpha to the Serbian pack in an effort to begin to unite the Canis lupis species. Their numbers are dwindling in the wake of the shortage of true mates and lack of offspring. The wolves are beginning to lose faith and darkness seems to be crashing in on them from all sides. But the winds of change are blowing, changes that will alter the future of not only the Canis lupis, but of another ancient race as well.
Amidst all of this, Sally is continuing to come to terms with her relationship with the playful, charming, flirty, unbelievably handsome bartender – who happens to be a member of the Romanian pack.
If all that weren’t enough, the Fates have decided to pay a little visit to Jen. It’s time to collect. She cheated the Fates of a life, her life. Now they want what they are due. The problem? It’s more than Jen is willing to pay.
Yes, the war is indeed far from over. Bargains will be struck, declarations will be made, sacrifices will be given, love will be tested, and trust will be questioned as evil makes its stand against them all
