Vivian Maylor is trying to hold it together. But her attempts to build a life with the man she loves seem doomed by the dragon inside her yearning to break free. Vivian is a dreamshifter, the last line of defense between reality and the dreamworld, and the only one of her kind.

Weston Jennings also believes he is the only one of his kind. He fears his powers as a dreamshifter, and resists learning to control them. After suffering a tragic loss, Weston heads deep into the woods of the Pacific Northwest to embrace a safe life of solitude. But when a terrible mistake leads to an innocent’s death, his guilt drives him to his former home, where he encounters what he never thought he would find: another shifter.

Now Vivian and Weston must work together to defeat a new threat to the dreamworld.

Between (The Between #1)
Behind 294 Pages
Released: 29 January 2013
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Ace
At the Other End:
Vivian Maylor can't sleep. Maybe it's because she just broke up with her boyfriend and moved to a new town, or it could be the stress of her new job at the hospital. But perhaps it's because her dreams have started to bleed through into her waking hours.

All of her life Vivian has rejected her mother's insane ramblings about Dreamworlds for concrete science and fact, until an emergency room patient ranting about dragons spontaneously combusts before her eyes--forcing Viv to consider the idea that her visions of mythical beasts might be real.

And when a chance encounter leads her to a man she knows only from her dreams, Vivian finds herself falling into a world that seems strange and familiar all at once--a world where the line between dream and reality is hard to determine, and hard to control...

Kerry Schafer is licensed both as a Mental Health Professional and an RN, and spends most of her daylight hours helping people–usually even with a smile. She is also the author of THE DREAM WARS novellas, available where electronic books are sold.
Kerry and her Viking live in Colville, Washington, in a little house surrounded by rocks, trees, and gangs of deer and wild turkeys.

Interview:
  1. Where have we seen you before? (previous projects/works)
The first of the Books of the Between came out in January 2013. It's called BETWEEN, and WAKEWORLD is the second in the series. I also have three e-novellas set in a different world – the Dream Wars series.
  1. What goes through your mind after your novel has been on sale for the first week?
After the first week? Alternating fits of panic, hope, and despair. I'd like to say I don't check the Amazon rankings obsessively, but I'd be lying! Also, turning a book loose into the big wide world is sort of like sending your beloved child off to college. Or may adventuring in South America. A little scary, even while it's exciting!
  1. What inspired you to write this novel?
You know that time when you're not quite dreaming and not quite awake, where dreaming and reality get sort of all mixed up and you're not sure what is real? Usually it only lasts a few seconds, or maybe a minute or two. I got to wondering what it would feel like to be lost there. That's the Between.
  1. How long was the writing/planning process?
Start to finish, the first book, Between, was about four years in the making. For Wakeworld, because I was on contract, I  had about a year.
  1. What was your reaction to the cover art when you saw it for the first time? Did you have any ideas from the days of writing/inspiration?
When I first saw the cover for Between, I felt disoriented because Vivian didn't look like that in my head. But I fell in love with it almost at once. As for Wakeworld? That was love at first sight. I didn't really have any input into either of the covers which is probably a good thing. I'm not much of an artist and it's best if I stick to writing.
  1. Any plans for future writing projects? Any being worked on now?
I'm currently writing the third of the Books of the Between. I've also finished the rough draft of a paranormal mystery, and I'm working on a collaborative project with fabulous author Alex Hughes. It's a sort of horror/thriller thing that we're having great fun with.
  1. What book/s from other authors do you wish you had written?
You're talking about those books. The ones that keep me from my own writing for a bit because I feel small and insignificant. Let's see. There are a lot of those, but here are a few: The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. The Fionovar Tapestry trilogy, by Guy Gavriel Kay. The Collegia Magica trilogy, by Carol Berg. Odd Thomas, by Dean Koontz.
  1. Why read your novel?
Because I wrote it and it's awesome and my mother loves it? Actually, my mother doesn't really love it because she's not fond of fantasy, but she would still like for you to read it! Okay, seriously now - The Books of the Between are a little different because they combine elements of both Urban Fantasy and High Fantasy. Plus – lots of dragons, especially in WAKEWORLD. If you're looking for romance, these may not be the books for you, because the love story – while present and important – doesn't drive the plot. But if you love fantasy and adventure, then you should give them a try!
