At the Other End:
In this thrilling sequel to All That Glows, the worlds of magic and mortal are colliding as London celebrates its new king, marking an era of unity between the Faery realm and the human one. Emrys, the Faery guard to the British royal family, sacrificed her powers to be with King Richard, choosing love over immortality. But now, as Emrys struggles to navigate her place between the Faery queen’s court and London’s lavish galas, danger looms beyond the Thames. When a prisoner with dark, strange magic breaks out of Queen Titania’s labyrinthine prison, endangering Emrys's king and sparking an uprising, Emrys must make the hardest decision of all.

Will she reclaim her magic to save Richard’s life and lose him forever? Or stay powerless as the kingdom goes down in flames?

P.S. Guys, that tea sounds AMAZING!
My name is Ryan and I've been writing ever since I grabbed one of my dad's old tax ledgers and created this masterpiece: see image.

My writing has since improved, though my obsession with wolves has remained relatively the same (I even own a wolf-hybrid pup.) My childhood was a happy, sunny thing. I grew up on a steady diet of fairytales, salt-marshes, music and brothers who would re-enact Redwall battles with me in the back yard. I went to an artsy sort of high-school that allowed cello recitals in the hallways and impromptu poetry slams in the cafeteria. It was there I decided that writing was what I wanted to do more than anything.

I'm officially a grownup now (I suppose one must admit that once they turn 26). My diet still includes fairytales, salt-marshes and art, but there are a few new loves thrown in. A big one is travel. Pieces of my heart are scattered like breadcrumbs all over the globe--I've bartered them off for writing inspiration, so I suppose it's a fair trade.

When I'm not cramming my earthly belongings into a backpack and waiting in airport security lines, I'm doing one of the following: Writing YA novels, Photographing weddings with my husband, Making our little white cottage more homey, Playing with my wolf pup, Trying out Korean r├ęcipes, Haunting local coffee shops with my friends.

1. Where have we seen you before? (previous projects/works)
My debut novel (and the prequel to ALL THAT BURNS) is a YA paranormal known as ALL THAT GLOWS, which hit the shelves last Feburary. My second novel THE WALLED CITY just came out this past November. It’s a YA thriller about three teenagers struggling to escape a lawless, walled city in 18 days.

2. What goes through your mind after your novel has been on sale for the first week?
One week out is when I let out the very long, proverbial breath I’ve been holding all of prerelease. At that point the novel in question is completely out of my hands and I can focus fully on “what’s next.” This isn’t to say it’s not tempting to check sales ranks every day. Or so. *cough cough*

3. What inspired you to write this novel?
My first book, ALL THAT GLOWS, sold to HarperTeen in a two book deal. I knew had to write the second chapter of Emrys’s story. She’s an immortal, powerful Fae who was tasked to guard the British royal family against Soul Feeders (dark immortals), but (BOOK ONE SPOILER) she ends up falling in love with Prince Richard and sacrificing her magic in order to be with him. I knew ALL THAT BURNS would deal with the loss of Emrys’s powers and the consequences of her choice to become mortal, as the world around her becomes more consciously ingratiated with magic.

4. What do you think about when getting/seeing negative reviews?
I’m not going to lie, sometimes it stings a bit. We authors spend a very, very long time on our projects and acquire a bit of tunnel vision where they’re concerned. That being said, I know everyone has different tastes. That’s what makes humanity so diverse and fascinating!

5. How long was the writing/planning process?
I started drafting ALL THAT BURNS in July 2012 and turned it into my editor March 2013. (9 months of on and off work between projects). Revisions took another two months of work!

6. What was your reaction to the cover art when you saw it for the first time? Did you have any ideas from the days of writing/inspiration?
ALL THAT BURNS was a bit different from my other projects, in that I got to see the cover before the book was even written. (The art department at HarperTeen shot the covers for book 1 and 2 at the same time.) It was the very first time I’d seen any cover art with my name on it, so it was a huge thrill to have not one but TWO covers for that first moment. There is a scene in ALL THAT BURNS (chapter 7) that I think was my subconscious attempt to mirror the book’s cover. I only noticed it when my editor pointed it out to me!

7. Any plans for future writing projects? Any being worked on now?
ALL THAT BURNS is the last of the faery books (for now, at least). I am currently working on a new alternative history series that I can’t divulge too much about. It’s a duology and the first book will be coming out with Little Brown (the publisher of THE WALLED CITY) in Fall 2015. As I type this I’m rough drafting the second book in the series, so I have sequels on my mind!

8. Top 5 books

  •  Every Harry Potter ever.
  •  The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
  •  The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor
  •  Vicious by V. E. Schwab
  •  Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke

9. What book/s from other authors do you wish you had written?
Probably all of the top 5 books I just previously stated. I love finding books with worlds I can get lost in. Even better as an author when you can get lost in the world you’re creating for months on end!

10. Why read your novel?

If you’ve ever wanted to kiss a king, go on the run with royalty, do battle with soul-eating creatures and solve a mystery in the heart of London, then ALL THAT BURNS is a great way to do it! Although it is a sequel to ALL THAT GLOWS, I wrote it so the story could stand on its own. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned fan of Emrys and Richard or fresh to the series. ALL THAT BURNS can be enjoyed equally by both!

  1. I just finished The Walled City and enjoyed Ryan's writing style a lot. It's quite immersive, although a bit slow at times. The concept of faes protecting the royals in London sounds so badass, thanks for sharing this interview Gina!

    1. I've got the Walled City, but I haven't read it yet! Can't wait to get into it :) I know right, it sounds amazing and the mix of fantasy and reality colliding is just wow. Thanks!

Thanks for leaving a comment, I love hearing what you have to say and talking to you all!
